When the German producers of the upcoming TV movie “Fateful Love” needed to shoot their 83-year-old  lead actress in some of the less navigable parts of Western Europe, Stargate’s Orbis rig was once again called into action.  The 9-camera circle rig recently traveled to Germany and Norway to shoot plates in an array of places so that production’s entire first unit would not have to shoot principle photography in those locations.

Stargate Orbis on the Road

StargateOrbis2

Our Stargate Orbis, designed by Stargate in conjunction with Curt von Badinski, has had a very busy last couple of months. From it’s introduction to the world at this year’s Cine Gear Expo to traveling all over the country this camera has proven to be worth all the hard work.  If you have not studied up on this rig as of yet then you do not know that it involves 9 Canon 5D Mark IVs, two operators, and the shortest, smallest car we can get our hands on.  The footage is then used for such things as driving plates or for building 360 virtual environments for greenscreen shooting.

In just the last few months since the Stargate Orbis’s maiden voyage it has traveled to Portland, San Francisco, Dallas, Tampa, Mt. Whitney, Big Sur, Monterey, and many more places. The ease of use and the ability to break the rig down into just a few bags makes it incredibly easy to travel with little notice needed from the client.

Stargate Studios Travels the World for Virtual Backlot™

From Paris to India to the Grand Canyon to Mumbai to Vegas, Stargate Studios has traveled all over the world to populate its rapidly growing Virtual Backlot™.  In a time when production companies are finding any way to cut costs sometimes filming on location is just not possible.  The solution? Film on greenscreen and have Stargate do the rest.  Between location plates and driving plates no matter what direction a scene calls for if we don’t have it, we can get it.  Look at part of our library here now Stargate Studios VB Library.

The article includes quotes from Sam Nicholson and DP Dana Christiaansen.

ARRI ALEXA vs Film: The Low Light Studies

Alexa Slide

With all the excitement surrounding the new ARRI ALEXA everyone seems to ask the same question ‘How does the ALEXA compare to film?’. From low light shooting, to dynamic range, to shooting on blue screen the ALEXA can definitely hold its own vs. film.  With a quieter blue channel than that of film it makes keying the shot even easier and the final product seem more seamless. The ALEXA also has the ability to shoot at ASA 6400 at night with only reactive light with little to no noise.

Don’t believe us? Watch the videos below from some of Stargate’s camera tests with the new ARRI ALEXA.
